The Big Village Quarterly Meeting was eventful to say the least! It was full of fascinating presentations from many different groups including the local youth. We are so thankful for everyone who could attend, provide their feedback, and are excited to work with you in the future. For those of you who weren’t able to make it, we’ve got you covered. Here are some highlights from the event, and a few photos. We’ll see you next time!
- Young people that are part of our student groups at multiple high schools around the city presented their findings on nicotine and tobacco advertisements and product placement at the point of sale in local businesses. Their mission was to discover and report on ways that these placements and advertisements affect decision making, not only for adults, but for the youth that frequent these establishments as well.
- Big Village in partnership with Alliance High School, The GDMA Student Coalition and Big Village Board Member and volunteer Jim Conway, have started a peer support group for students at Alliance High School who are affected by substance abuse.
- Big Village and the Volunteers of America have come together to partner in helping young people in Portland reach their full potential. Volunteers of America has a comprehensive strategy to prevent harm to young people. VOA focuses on Substance Abuse Prevention, Problem Gambling Prevention, providing After School Programs and Community Pathways Network Navigator Program.
- Big Village has been collecting data around youth substance abuse and some of the data we have found is a little scary. Through our research 25% of high school students reported binge drinking. Binge drinking is defined as having four or more drinks in a two hour period. Four drinks in a two hour period for a high school student who does not drink regularly can be devastating to there system. Not only can it harm the adolescent developing brain but there is also a high rate of excessive drinking prevalent in accidental injuries or death especially auto related as well as teen pregnancy and suicide.
Those were just the highlights! So many more amazing things were discussed and decided at this meeting, so you’ll want to make sure you’re able to make it to the next one! Now, without further ado, here are some photos of these amazing presenters in action. Come join Big Village in helping our young people make good decisions and thrive.
